Kathy Morris healing through “Inner Journeys”

We heard recently of an interesting venture from one the of the contributors to the Journey of Healing. Kathy Morris, the author of the personal essay “Up From The Ashes,” is reaching out to victims of abuse through her Philadelphia-based organization, Inner Journeys, which “offers natural techniques to heal.” We understand that Kathy, a retired police officer, is available for workshops, lectures, private and group sessions. We wish her well, and hope her efforts prove of value to other survivors of abuse. Here is the link to Kathy’s web site:

Journey contributor on “Oprah”

Journey of Healing contributor M.E. Hart was invited to be part of the audience for Oprah Winfrey’s recent show about male sexual abuse survivors. He wrote to us about the experience:

I was very proud to stand with the 200 male survivors of childhood sexual abuse on Oprah’s landmark show. It was a powerful acknowledgment of the secret horrors many men live through as children. Oprah wanted to help abused men break the silence and release the shame. She did that for millions. We owe her our thanks.

And we owe Hart our thanks for his extraordinary contributions to the Journey, including his powerful and award-winning poem “Healing Walks.”

Very sad news

We at the Safer Society Foundation were very saddened this week to learn of the sudden death of Sabrina M. Simmons, one of the key contributors to The Journey of Healing. In addition to her eloquent personal essay “Anger,” Sabrina generously volunteered the use of her exquisite photography, the perfect adornment for the anthology. We all had the chance to meet Sabrina when she traveled to Vermont from her home in Savannah, Georgia, for the launch celebration in April, for which we are grateful.

We wish to extend our sincere condolences to Sabrina’s family and friends.

The Journey of Healing was launched at a celebration held at the University of Vermont on April 21. The event included readings by several of the contributors. Here are a few phtographs from the event:

Marjorie Ryerson, editor of the anthology, hosted the launch, introducing each of the readers.

The launch of the Journey of Healing brought out an enthusiastic crowd to the John Dewey Lounge at the University of Vermont.

Contributor Hart was unable to attend the launch, but the audience was able to hear and see him thanks to a pre-recorded video.

Some local attention from the media

We’re just catching up on a little of the local news media attention for The Journey of Healing.

The Rutland Herald said the book was “raising awareness.”

And the Herald of Randolph had a nice story a couple of weeks ago.

The anthology also received the attention of our local CBS affiliate, as mentioned previously.
